King George V - Esplanade Road - George Town - Parry's Corner - Madras



George V visited Chennai in 1906 (when the Chennai Government decided to change the name of Black Town to George Town), and again in 1911. To mark the visit various statues of George V were commissioned. Diwan Bahadur GovinDoss Chathoorbhooja Doss, a wealthy Madras banker and fabric merchant, also contributed statues of Edward VII to the city. Mackennal's sculpture portrays the King wearing his coronation robes over the costume of the Order of the Garter. Bronze statue on stone pedestal with elaborately carved Royal shield. Commissioned by Diwan Bahadur GovinDoss Chathoorbhooja Doss, Sheriff of Madras c1912. The statue of his majesty King George V, Emperor of India was presented to the city of Madras by Govindoss Chathoor Bhooja Doss in 1914.
